Philosopher’s Café: War, Peacekeeping and Canada’s Military

Art exhibition featuring Major Brent Beardsley, who served 32 years as an infantry officer in the Canadian Forces, including Rwanda. Major Beardsley offers a unique perspective on issues raised by contemporary art in Terms of Engagement: Averns, feldman-kiss, Stimson. Works by three artists recently deployed to different conflict zones as participants in the Canadian Forces Artists Program. Conversation will focus on the history and future of Canada’s role within international peacekeeping in a bid to unpack the complex relationship between culture and conflict. Jamie Swift, a Kingston writer and activist affiliated with Queen’s University, and coauthor of Warrior Nation: Rebranding Canada in an Age of Anxiety (2013), will facilitate the discussion.
