First Nations' Rights: Pipelines and Indigenous Sovereignty

May 01, 2014

Grand Chief Stewart Phillip, President of the Union of BC Indian Chiefs and Chair of the OkanaganNation Alliance, with Ardith Walkem, lawyer, author and member of Nlaka’pamux Nation.
There are many unresolved issues concerning the relationship between the sovereignty of the original nations and the aspirations of the major corporations that shape Canada’s economy. These have come to a head. The need to protect existing resource industries such as fishing and tourism to provide for future generations is now pitted against short-term profit from the exploitation of non-renewable oil, gas and water resources.
