Connexions Calendar

Is that an archive in your basement... or are you just hoarding?

November 24, 2012

CONNEXIONS invites you to an open house and networking event for amateur archivists, keepers of the radical past, and friends and supporters of grassroots archives, independent libraries, and people's history. Bring your stories, ideas, and examples of grassroots and radical history.

Are you an 'accidental archivist'? Have you been saving the publications and documents produced by the social justice projects you've been involved in? Have those materials you collected grown into a daunting accumulation of stuff in your basement, garage, or storage locker? Are you looking for a solution?

If so, you aren't alone. The CONNEXIONS ARCHIVE - 100,000+ social-justice documents and growing - is on the hunt for a secure home. It turns out a surprising number of other people, projects, and small archives are wrestling with similar problems: trying to figure out how to preserve informal archives found in basements and back offices and, just as important, to make them accessible.

Connexions hopes to initiate a discussion and perhaps a working group about the 'archive problem.' "Maybe we can work together to find solutions," says Connexions Co-ordinator Ulli Diemer. "Can we figure out a way to network of sustainable local grassroots archive projects which collaborate on preserving and digitizing materials?"
Remembering is another way of continuing the Long Revolution: the struggle for justice. Come and share materials you've saved, memories, and ideas for ensuring a future for the past.
