REEP Workshop - Put Your Driveway and Sidewalks on a Low Salt Diet

February 09, 2012

Alternative Products and Hands-On Tips for Your Home

Nobody wants to slip and slide on their sidewalks and driveways, but nobody wants too much salt to burn pet paws, damage plants, and pollute rivers and groundwater either. What can we do to reduce our salt use? What are the best winter tools for shoveling and chipping? What are the most effective salt alternative products?

Come and find out from Colleen Brown, Water Education Coordinator with the Region of Waterloo. Be prepared to bundle up and head outside to try a variety of chippers, shovels and salt alternatives, and see what works best for you.

Workshop includes:
* Introduction to RAIN and Smart About Salt programs
* Understanding the problems related to outdoor salt use
* Mechanical tips and techniques for reducing ice
* Review of alternative products
* Outdoor test of shovels, choppers, salt alternatives on test ice patches
* Discussion of best practices on permeable paving

This workshop is part of the RAIN program, which promotes an ecological approach to stormwater management.
