International Human Rights Day: From Volunteerism to Activism

December 10, 2011

50 years ago (June 6th, 1961), Canadian University Services Overseas was born of a number of university based organizations that had recently started sending volunteers overseas. As CUSO volunteers, they were part of an international movement of people with a commitment to social development and a desire to help others. Thousands have subsequently gone south to teach, train, operate, facilitate and assist in a number of professional situations that sought to reduce poverty and develop people's human rights.

Volunteerism became activism.
In this landmark, there is an opportunity to recognize the contribution of volunteers and activists to international human rights. December 10th, International Human Rights Day is an opportunity to celebrate the advance of human rights. A celebration is an opportunity once more to encourage others to contribute to the social development of others and to promote international human rights.
