María Estela Barco is Coordinator of DESMI, a non-governmental organization based in the state of Chiapas that works with Ch'ol and Tzotzil communities to promote sustainable development and the rights of Indigenous Peoples. María Estela has a long history of accompanying campesino and Indigenous communities. Prior to her work with DESMI, she worked alongside Bishop Samuel Ruiz, renowned and beloved for his promotion and defense of the rights of Indigenous Peoples.
This event is organized in collaboration with Horizons of Friendship, sponsors of María Elena's visit to Canada.
