The Story of Electronics with Annie Leonard and Mary Jean O'Donnell

March 08, 2011

The Story of Electronics - the film and the Canadian Perspective.

This seminar will screen the film "The Story of Electronics" which champions product take back for waste electronics and encourages companies to make less toxic, more easily recyclable and longer lasting products. Produced by Free Range Studios and hosted by Annie Leonard, the eight-minute film explains 'planned obsolescence' - products designed to be replaced as quickly as possible - and the often hidden consequences for workers, the environment and the rest of us.

The film will be followed by a lively presentation that focuses on Ontario's Electronic Stewardship Program and electronics recycling in Canada. The Ontario Electronic Stewardship Program ensures that all electronic waste collected in Ontario stays in Ontario for primary processing. The significance of the program is that e-waste is not shipped overseas to be processed in questionable factories with questionable practices. The Ontario Electronic Stewardship Program creates jobs in Ontario, protects the environment and people in developing nations - a win, win, win situation.
