The Last Rite: Understanding Death and Dying in a Multicultural Society

March 01, 2011

Couchiching (www.couch.ca) is Canada's oldest and most recognized public affairs organization. A not-for-profit, volunteer-based organization whose mission is to increase awareness and understanding among Canadians on important public affairs issues, we do not advocate any position or lobby for action, but instead foster healthy and informed dialogue.

The "Couchiching Conversations" is a new initiative intended to bring the spirit of Couchiching to new topics and participants, year-round and across the GTA.

Gina Valle’s film, The Last Rite, illustrates how Muslims, Hindus and Buddhists ritualize death. This Couchiching Conversation will feature a screening of the one-hour film, brief remarks by Dr. Valle, and an open discussion to explore participants’ concerns and experiences with this ultimate passage and funeral rites in the Canadian diasporic environment.

What new "Canadian" Hindu, Muslim, and Buddhist traditions are being born out of members of these and other faith communities coming together -- from different parts of the world -- to practice together? What challenges and "reinventions" of tradition are arising? And what sorts of practical, logistical, legal, or simply theological issues have participants encountered? How have they solved problems and challenges? How do they include relatives who are far away? Does death and dying take on a different significance in an adopted homeland, far from the history of “back home”?
