Rewriting a Country: Towards a Just and Peaceful Canada

November 19, 2010 to November 21, 2010

Conference towards a just and peaceful Canada:

The conservative and corporate elites are trying to remake the popular vision Canadians have of their country. They appear to be succeeding. Military aggression has replaced peacekeeping. Global competition is in. Is a caring and sharing society out? What happened to recognition of the deep diversity of Canada as embracing visible minorities, First Nations and Quebec as a distinct nation? Is Canada still sovereign or must it always wait for US policies to take the lead? The conference looks at the hopeful politics of retrieving Canadians' popular view of a country where social and environmental justice prevail.

The conference will feature:

Margaret Atwood - Canada's most famous author

Marci McDonald - award-winning journalist and author of The Armageddon Factor

Amir Khadir - anti-capitalist, Quebec's second most popular politician and co-leader of Quebec Solidaire

Murray Dobbin - activist, journalist, broadcaster, and author

Joyce Green - professor of political science at the University of Regina

Linda McQuaig - journalist and co-author of The Trouble with Billionaires

Grace Edward Galabuzi - leading expert on race and poverty in Canada

George Elliot Clarke - playwright, poet and chronicler of 'Africadia'

...and many other writers, academics, and activists from across Canada
