Art Exhibition: Divided and Found

November 25, 2010 to January 09, 2010

As with many plants and trees, the cactus and poppy are important symbols for Palestinians, representing their relationship to the land of Palestine. In villages and farms, the cactus was planted to form natural fences, and their sweet fruit was enjoyed in the late summer months. Many of the villages destroyed in 1948 during the Nakba can still be seen outlined by cactus hedges, stubbornly resisting attempts to alter the landscape, and returning despite repeated uprootings, forming a memory of what once was Sabr, the Arabic word for cactus which means patience and steadfastness. Cactus has become associated with the Palestinian struggle in the face of dispossession, informing artist and poets despite the appropriation of the symbol by Jews born in historic Palestine.

The poppy is a happy memory for Palestinians as it is plentiful across the hills and land of Palestine and is the first flower to appear in spring, announcing return and rebirth.

The two plants are not only at the core of this exhibition but also central to the memory and the struggle for artist, Christina Damianos. These paintings trace Damianos' fractured journey across many dimensions of being and memory. As a young child, a woman, a Palestinian, an Israeli citizen, a mother, an artist and a health professional, she shares with us the struggles of assembling her past and future.

Christina Damianos is a Greek-Palestinian born in Cyprus to a Greek father born in Palestine and a Palestinian mother. She grew up and was educated in Israel and now lives in Canada with her daughter and their constant companion, Buffy, the keeshound.

Beit Zatoun is very pleased to host the first showing of the work of Christina Damianos. This exhibit continues through the holidays to Sunday, January 9, 2011.
