The Changing Coastal Zone Of Lake Ontario And Associated Ecological/Environmental Issues

December 01, 2010

TODD HOWELL, Great Lakes Ecologist, Water Monitoring and Reporting Section, Environmental Monitoring and Reporting Branch, Ontario Ministry of the Environment

ABSTRACT: The complexity of the human footprint on Lake Ontario and a continuing trajectory of ecological change in the lake make it a challenging setting in which to conserve our coastal water resources. Regional variation in the scale of influence of adjacent watersheds on the nearshore is related to land use features. Sharp gradients in nutrients, solids and fecal pollution at the shoreline, driven by tributary runoff, change significantly over time and are strongly affected by discharge volume and quality. Despite the obvious influence of the surrounding land on the nearshore, total phosphorus concentration over much of the nearshore is similar to the open lake. As with the open lake, nearshore phosphorus has declined to levels below the target identified in the Canada-US Great Lakes Water Quality Agreement. Yet fouling by the green algae Cladophora degrades the aesthetic quality of shoreline over diverse areas. From the late 1950’s to early 1980’s overabundance of Cladophora on the shallow lakebed was synonymous with the eutrophication of the lower Great Lakes. Bi-national management of phosphorus loading, beginning in the 1970s, had the desired effect of reducing nutrient status in Lake Ontario and there was little indication of Cladophora-related problems from the mid-1980s to late-1990s.
