Gender and Political Violence: A Conversation with Dedé Mirabal

September 23, 2010

The International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women, observed yearly on November 25, was designated by the United Nations to commemorate the death of three of the Mirabal sisters. They were assassinated by the Trujillo regime in the Dominican Republic in 1960.
Immortalized in film and literature, the story of these sisters has become a symbol for the power of peaceful political resistance hiding behind the vulnerability of unarmed women. Join us in welcoming Ms. Dedé Mirabal, the surviving sister, who will visit Toronto this September, just over a month before the commemoration of the 49th anniversary of the assassination of her sisters. Ms. Mirabal will share her testimony of these tragic events that shaped history and gender consciousness in Latin America. She is 85 years old and lives in the family home in the heart of the Dominican countryside. She remains an active advocate for truth and human rights. Her award-winning memoir "Vivas en mi jardín" (‘Alive in my garden’) – was published last year.

The event will start with the screening of the acclaimed documentary: "Code name: Butterflies"
