Keffiyeh/Made in China

October 14, 2016

Children, Parents, Lovers, Friends, Siblings, Strangers – Keffiyeh/Made in China interrogates how we are alienated and separated from each other in the most intimate ways. Eight seemingly unrelated vignettes attempt to find a repressed humanity among the invisible forces of occupation in Palestine. Dalia Taha’s original story uses brisk and repetitive dialogue along with scarce settings to create a space outside of social context to better examine ourselves in the face of fragility, domination, and fragmentation.

From Muftah.org (Palestinian website)
With two or three people in each scene, Taha writes with a searing wit that confounds expectations held by and of each of her characters, whether a Palestinian keffiyeh merchant or Belgian tourist. Throughout the piece, short arguments between strangers, friends, lovers, and colleagues serve as unlikely markers of collective experience. Taha challenges the world of social media click-bait, state-supported video propaganda, and stereotypes that are all too easily accepted in order to unearth the human connections that exist in the smallest and strangest of personal encounters. The play demonstrates how a single conversation can undo decades of assumptions.
