OISE Lecture: Contesting Law’s Monopoly on Violence: Human Rights and Absolute Prohibition on Forced Psychiatric Intervention

Austraiian lawyer Dr. Linda Steele will be giving a public speech at OISE on the human rights violations inherent in involuntary psychiatric interventions and on the international Campaigne to Bring About Compliance with the UN Absolute Prohibition. The context of the speeic is the UN having officially interpreted its Convention on the Rights of Persons with Disabilities as mandating an absolute prohibition on forced psychiatric intervention, which to be in compliance, states would have to get rid of at once nonconsensual treatment, involuntary committal, and the existence of locked wards. Dr. Steele is a one of the legal luminaries in the campagine. Following the lecture will be a Q&A.
