BLOODLINES - Readings by daughters and fathers

June 16, 2016

In celebration of Italian Heritage Month

Does an Italian-Canadian daughter differ from other daughters in the Canadian landscape? In this special event to celebrate both Italian Heritage month and Father's Day, three Italian-Canadian women writers mix blood and ink to explore their complex relationships with fathers- the life-affirming gifts and oppressive self-defeating demands, the weight of family honour, of growing up as daughters within Italian immigrant culture. Three male writers, including our special guest, George Elliott Clarke (Canada's Parliamentary Poet Laureate), give voice to their kindred and diverse experiences as fathers: the blood instinct to protect that conflicts with the creative necessity to release their female children from lines that bind but too often restrict.
