Reuben Slonim: Toronto's last prophetic rabbi

October 14, 2015

Reuben Slonim (1914-2000) was a Winnipeg-born rabbi who in 1937 came to Toronto as the first Canadian to head a Canadian congregation. After the Six Day War of 1967 part of which he spent in a bomb shelter in Israel with his daughter, Slonim returned to his synagogue and said that Israel might win the war, but it would lose the peace if it did not show magnanimity towards the Arabs. He maintained that the deepest ethical values of Judaism were being jeopardized and betrayed by Israel's blatant ghettoization and suffering of another Semitic people, the Palestinians.

About the Speaker
Ted Schmidt the former editor of Catholic New Times was a friend of Slonim's and will speak about his life and the ongoing challenge to institutional Judaism especially as it relates to the Palestine-Israel situation.
