Toronto, Baltimore and Beyond: Confronting Police Violence in Communities

September 23, 2015

In the aftermath of the shooting of Trayvon Martin and the acquittal of his killer, Alicia Garza, Patrisse Cullors and Opal Tometi used the hashtag #BlackLivesMatter to express their outrage over state-sanctioned violence towards Black people and Black communities. In the wake of continued police brutality, communities in Toronto and in cities throughout the world have organized to increase police accountability through various means and build movements in communities to fight back against police violence. What can movements learn from each other while recognizing the differences they face? How can strategies be shared across organizations?

With Speakers
* Alicia Garza, co-creator of #BlackLivesMatter
* Yusra Ali, Black Lives Matter-Toronto Coalition
* Kimalee Phillip, Network for the Elimination of Police Violence
