Indigenous/Black Relations: The Past and Present

November 27, 2017

As Bell Hooks contends, "The memory of earlier communion between African and Native American lay the
groundwork of an interaction based in mutual respect and reciprocity". Thus this panel discussion is purposed at relocating the past alliances and kinships between African Diasporic and folks Indigenous to Turtle Island.

The goal of the panel is to address how Indigenous peoples and African Diasporic peoples have already in the past formed relationships outside of the frames of whiteness (that has at times pitted, and continues to be upheld through pitting marginalized groups against each other). We will talk through racism (Anti-Indigenous & Anti-Black), colonialism from the perspectives of Indigenous and/or Black peoples. This is a preliminary step towards beginning the discussion of solidarity. There will be opportunities for the audience to ask questions, and for everyone to connect more casually after the panel.
