Living in Gaza- Day to Day

April 14, 2015

Gaza - Human not Humanitarian
People not Statistics

Living in Gaza seems impossible to people living in Toronto. How do Gazans manage to have a daily everyday life under a complete siege lasting almost 10 years, a non-existent infrastructure, with constant threat of deadly attack and periodic massive destruction? It is simply unimaginable for most Canadians.

We mostly hear and know about the "humanitarian disaster" aspects of Gaza - reports from the UN rapporteur, the analyst, the media, and also from activists. These are often delivered by people who are in Gaza for short periods, live in privileged conditions and then make an exit.

There is a certain abstraction when speaking of political forces and societal issues, of massive military destruction, destroyed and unrepaired infrastructure, economic sanctions and deprivations, international law and human rights etc. These reports are at the macro level of "population" and do not really deal with human beings. They leave us with many questions about at the everyday, the ordinary, the mundane faced by each individual person, families and neighbourhoods.
