Commemorating the Triumph of the Venezuelan People

April 11, 2015

Remarks by
Honourable Martha Pardo de Márquez
Consul General of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela in Toronto

Commemorating the Triumph of the Venezuelan People over the US-manufactured coup d'état attempt of 2002. The failed coup d'état on 11 April 2002, toppled President Hugo Chavez (newly elected in 2000) for 47 hours, before being restored by combined efforts of military loyalists, social movements and Venezuela's poor. The leadership of Chavez until his passing in 2013 helped to create a new era of greater independence and confidence in Latin America leading to a number of socialist and international victories. The Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela continues to defy imperialist forces despite attacks and massive pressure.
