Solidarity Rally for Steelworkers

GTA Education Worker Locals unite to invite all members to stand in solidarity with United Steelworkers Local 9176 by joining them on their picket line.

For 19 months, 120 Steelworkers (employees of Crown Metal Packaging, a subsidiary of Crown Holdings Inc.) have been on strike at their plant in North York, where they make high-quality cans for some of the biggest beer brands. In 2012, the Toronto plant won Crown's "Plant of the Year" award for their productivity. On September 6, 2013, Crown forced the workers to strike by demanding up to 42% in pay cuts for new hires, other unfair take-backs, and a continued freeze on pay and pension contributions (after having already been frozen for nine years). With his workers on strike, Crown's CEO continues to make $6,000/hour. The company has also hired replacement workers to keep the plant running and unnecessarily prolong the strike. Even if the workers agree to huge, unjust cuts, the company plans to keep the replacement workers and fire 75% of the striking workers. More info at takebacksnomore.ca.
