Anarchists led by Luigi Galleani explode eight large bombs in eight different cities in the U.S. None of the intended targets – politicians and judges – is hurt, but a nightwatchman in New York is killed, and one of the anarchists dies when the bomb he is preparing explodes prematurely.

American steelworkers go out on strike against the leading U.S. steel companies. The strike brings steel manufacturing in the United States to a virtual halt, and has a severe impact on military production.
The strike is settled on July 24, with the workers gaining a significant wage increase and winning a union shop.
