Thomas Walkom answers the question “should all heavy-oil projects be nixed for the sake of the planet?” with “maybe.”

The answer is obviously “yes.” Present emissions are already too much and carbon released from extreme extraction such as the tarsands, experts say, will tip the planet over to become uninhabitable.

The health impacts from such extraction is also unacceptable, suffered by indigenous people and workers, and the local environmental costs are huge. We need to find a better way for our world and we need to do it now.
