Clicking on the title of an item takes you to the bibliographic page for the resource, which typically also contains an abstract, a link to the full text if it is available online, and links to related topics in the subject index. You can find items through the Title, Author, Subject, Chronological, Dewey, Library of Congress, and Format indexes.
Particularly recommended items are flagged with a red Connexions logo:

  1. Agreement on terms
    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter
    First Published: 2007
I have come to accept that western journalists cannot accurately, let alone objectively, represent the Middle East and the Arab world. The problem is not that journalists do not always adhere to their own professional codes and methods, though that does happen. It is that even if correspondents strictly obey all the rules, they still present a fundamentally biased and skewed picture of the Middle East.
  2. Aljazeera - English home page
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site
English-language site of the Arabic news network.
  3. America’s last taboo
    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter
    First Published: 2002
The unspoken premise of the mainstream press is that no Palestinian or Arab position on Israeli police terror, settler-colonialism, or military occupation is worth hearing from.
  4. Chomsky.Info
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site
    The Noam Chomsky Web site.
  5. Control Room
    Resource Type: Film/Video
    First Published: 2004
Shows the coverage of the 2003 Iraqi war from the perspective of Al Jazeera, the Arab world's most popular news outlet.
  6. Counterpunch
    Periodical profile

    Resource Type: Serial Publication (Periodical)
Progressive U.S. newsletter edited by Alexander Cockburn and Jeffrey St. Clair.
  7. Covering Israel-Palestine: The BBC's Double Standards
An Exchange With The BBC’s Middle East Editor Jeremy Bowen

    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter
    First Published: 2008
The priorities of the news media mean that the more Palestinians are killed, the less importance their deaths have to news organisations. Conversely, the fewer Israelis killed the more seriousness their deaths are accorded.
  8. Double Standards
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site
Focusing on double standards in the media and in international politics. "Double Standard 1. a rule or principle applied more strictly to some people more than others (or oneself)."
  9. Electronic Intifada
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site
Palestinian portal for information about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict and its depiction in the media. News, commentary, analysis, and reference materials about the Israeli-Palestinian conflict from a Palestinian perspective.
  10. "Exterminate all the Brutes": Gaza 2009
    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter
    First Published: 2009
Israel has a straightforward means to defend itself: put an end to its criminal actions in occupied territories, and accept the long-standing international consensus on a two-state settlement that has been blocked by the US and Israel for over 30 years, since the US first vetoed a Security Council resolution calling for a political settlement in these terms in 1976. The Arab League has gone even beyond the consensus, calling for full normalization of relations with Israel. Hamas has repeatedly called for a two-state settlement in terms of the international consensus. Iran and Hezbollah have made it clear that they will abide by any agreement that Palestinians accept.
  11. The Gulf Within: Canadian Arabs, Racism, & The Gulf War
    Resource Type: Book
The Gulf Within documents the experiences of Arab and Muslim Canadians during the Gulf War. It's about the subtle and not-so-subtle anger and distrust other Canadians and institutions demonstrated towards these groups.
  12. Ha'aretz
    Periodical profile

    Resource Type: Serial Publication (Periodical)
    Israeli daily newspaper
  13. International Middle East Media Center
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site
Media center developed in collaboration between Palestinian and International journalists to provide English language media coverage of Israel-Palestine.
  14. Israel/Palestine: Resources for peace, justice, and human rights
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site
    First Published: 2006   Published: 2009
A selection of resources for those looking for a solution to the Middle East crisis based on peace, justice, and human rights.
  15. Israeli Deaths Matter More
    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter
    First Published: 2008
The reality is that by devoting disproportionate coverage to Israeli deaths over Palestinian deaths, the BBC’s claims to “impartial” reporting are simply demolished. With great consistency, lives in the ‘Third World’ are presented as being of far less importance than those who are ‘like us’.
  16. Justice in the News: A Response to the targetting of media in Gaza
    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter
    First Published: 2009
A mission to Gaza found that media were subject to intimidation and direct military assault and deliberately prevented from working freely. The findings confirm evidence of frequent targeting of media during the operations.

Bringing Death and Destruction to Muslims

    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter
    First Published: 2008
Americans do not think of themselves or of Israel as terrorist states, but the evidence is complete and overwhelming. Thanks to the power of the Israel Lobby, Americans only know the Israeli side of the story, which is that evil anti-semite Palestinians will not let blameless Israelis live in peace and persist in their unjustified terror attacks on an innocent Israeli state.
  18. Manufacturing Consent
The Political Economy of the Mass Media

    Resource Type: Book
    First Published: 1988
Contrary to the usual image of the press and cantankerous, obstinate, and ubiquitious in its search for truth, Herman and Chomsky depict how an underlying elite consensus largely structures all facets of the news. They analyze how issues are framed and topics chosen, and the way in which the marketplace and the economics of publishing significantly shape the news.
  19. Media bias on the Middle East
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site

    Thought Control in Democratic Societies

    Resource Type: Book
    First Published: 1989   Published: 1991

  21. Operation Cast Lead: News control as a military objective
    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter
    First Published: 2009
Control of news in time of war has become a military objective.
  22. Palestine Media Watch
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site
PMWATCH was established to promote fair and accurate coverage of the Israeli occupation of Palestine in the US mainstream media. In broad terms, our mission is two-fold: (1) identify, report on, and protest clear journalistic failures by the US media in covering the conflict, and (2) help media outlets with access to pro-Palestinian points of view and voices for interviews, op-eds, or background discussions, whether here in the United States, in Israel, or in the Occupied Territories. 24. Pro-Israel stance reeks of double standards and historical amnesia
    Resource Type: Article/Report/Letter

Israel bombs, terrorizes and kills as it pleases, on a daily basis, and the media praise it for its restraint.
  25. Radical Digressions 4
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site
    First Published: 2006   Published: 2008
  26. Radical Digressions 5
    Resource Type: Internet WWW site

Mission Connexions exists to support individuals and groups working for freedom and social justice. We work to maintain and make available a record of the theory and practice of people struggling against oppression and for social change. We believe that the more we know about the struggles, victories, and defeats of the past, and about those who took part in them, the better equipped we will be to bring a new world into being. Connexions maintains a physical archive of books and documents, and is engaged in an ongoing project to build and expand an indexed digital archive of documents. We try to feature a wide variety of resources reflecting a diversity of viewpoints and approaches to social change within our overall mandate of support for democracy, civil liberties, freedom of expression, universal human rights, secularism, equality, economic justice, environmental responsibility, and the creation and preservation of community. We are internationalist in our orientation, but as a Canadian-based project we feature an especially extensive collection of Canadian documents and profiles of Canadian activist organizations.
