Abstract:
The Chinese Canadian National Council is calling on the Canadian government to acknowledge the injustice and racial discrimination inherent in the Head Tax (from 1885 to 1923) and the Chinese Exclusion Act (from 1923 to 1943). Compensation includes recognizing the suffering that resulted from the legislated discrimination, and returning a sum at least as large as that taken by the tax, to be given to individuals and the community (with special emphasis on senior citizens, public education, and race relations).
