Abstract:  This entertaining collection of articles on the historical relationship between specific Canadians and various Central American countries has been compiled by Peter McFarlane based on months of research at the National Archives, on interviews with Canadian government officials, on a review of periodicals and research libraries, and more, recently, on documents acquired under the Access to Information Act.
McFarlane became interested in Canada's historical role in Central America when he found during his travels and research on Central America, that much reference was made and interest held in Canada. He discovered that many Central Americans thought of Canada as a confident hemispheric power that had traditionally been an important player in regional affairs. McFarlane chronicles stories such as of William Van Horne of Canadian Pacific attempting to build a railway in Guatemala, and outlines stories from the days of "foreign adventures" to the recent efforts of Canadian activists to challenge our traditional role.
